The 1861 Census marked the third collection of statistics for the Province of Canada. What information did each province submit to the census?
Each province submitted unique schedules. Questions were asked either in French or in English in Canada East depending on the language spoken by the enumerator. Agricultural returns provide information such as lot and concession number, acreage, livestock and agricultural products.
What happened to the original census schedules?
Although the original census schedules were destroyed many years ago, the books were kept and eventually moved to the PRO archive. The books were then filmed in 1970 to prevent the increasing usage from destroying these fragile records.
