When it comes to epic hikes with kids, the Barron Canyon Trail is the second amazingly epic hike my kids experienced in 2018. Located on the east end of Algonquin Provincial Park, in Ontario, close to Petawawa, it’s most convenient to access from the Sand Lake Gates.
How long is Barron Canyon Algonquin Park?
Barron Canyon Trail is a 1.5 km loop trail that lead along the north rim of the spectacular, 100 m deep Barron Canyon and then returning to the parking lot.
Is Barron Canyon Road paved?
It is located 50 km from the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy. 17) near Pembroke and is accessed via Sand Lake Gate on the Barron Canyon Road (8 km paved road, 42 km gravel road).
Can you kayak the Barron Canyon?
Although it is in principle possible to reach the Barron Canyon by canoe from the west side of the park, the portaging required is so daunting that most trippers drive in via the Sand Lake access point. This is reached from Highway 17 just north of Pembroke.
How tall is Barron Canyon?
The 100-metre (328 ft) deep Barron Canyon was formed during that time. The rocks exposed in the Canyon are part of the Canadian Shield. The canyon itself still shows activity in the form of rockfalls and landslides. The Barron River lies inside a fault associated with the Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben.
Can you swim in High Falls?
At the base of High Falls is a large pool which is ideal for swimming and fishing. Swimmers are often seen jumping from the sides of the waterfall. Bass, perch and trout can be found in the waters along the creek.
How was the Barron Canyon formed?
The Barron Canyon formed 10,000 years ago when the runoff of a “1000 Niagara Falls”, along with faults in the Canadian Shield rocks, created an area of impressive 100m high cliffs with boulder covered slopes. The Barron Canyon Trail takes you to cliff lookouts along the north side of the Barron River.
