Hansard is the official report of debates for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. Hansard Services records, transcribes and prints the debates of the Legislative Assembly and its parliamentary committees.

Who writes Hansard? Hansard is written by two groups of people. Firstly, the politicians themselves. Since it is a record of the proceedings of Parliament, every Member and Senator who speaks helps write Hansard, because their words are taken down.

Why is it called a Hansard?
Hansard, the official report of the debates of both houses of the British Parliament. The name and publication format were subsequently adopted by other Commonwealth countries. It is so called after the Hansards, a family of printers who began working with Parliament in the late 18th century.

Rewriting or altering the transcript: the Hansard record is, as far as is possible, a record of what was actually said. A speaker should not change the transcript to put in what they wished they had said or what they would have written in a formal paper on the subject.

Hansard reporters, who are highly trained, take 10‐minute turns to record the debates and proceedings of Parliament, using machine short‐ hand, written shorthand or audio transcription.

Hansard staff Hansard reporters sit at a small table in the middle of the Chamber, near the end of the Table of the House. They are responsible for producing a written record of the proceedings. These days computer-assisted transcription and voice recognition technology are used, rather than shorthand.
WHO publishes Hansard?
Today the New Zealand Hansard is produced by a team of 17 FTE Hansard Editors within the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives. Hansard is published on the New Zealand Parliament website each day the House sits, and later indexed bound volumes are produced.
