What is an ssDeep hash?
ssdeep is a program for computing context triggered piecewise hashes (CTPH). Also called fuzzy hashes, CTPH can match inputs that have homologies. Such inputs have sequences of identical bytes in the same order, although bytes in between these sequences may be different in both content and length.
How do ssDeep hashes compare?
In order to compare a fixed ssDeep hash against a set of other ssDeep hashes, the ssDeep compare function must be called for each hash being tested. This means if you are comparing an ssDeep hash against 1,000 other ssDeep hashes, you need to call the ssDeep comparison function 1,000 times.
What is a fuzzy hash?
Fuzzy hashing is a type of compression function for calculating the similarity between digital files. It attempts to automate the process of grouping similar malware. Fuzzy hash functions hold a certain tolerance for changes, and can tell how different two files are by comparing the similarity of their outputs.
What is ssdeep value?
SSDEEP creates a hash value that attempts to detect the level of similarity between two files at the binary level. This is different from a cryptographic hash (like SHA1) because a cryptographic hash can check exact matches (or non-matches).
What is ssdeep in Linux?
ssdeep is a tool for recursive computing and matching of Context Triggered Piecewise Hashing (aka Fuzzy Hashing). Fuzzy hashing is a method for comparing similar but not identical files.
Why file hashes md5 SHA 1 SHA 256 etc are useful to malware analysts?
The main purposes of these hashes are identification and blocklisting of samples. Using them for blocklisting makes sense because an attacker will have difficulty to design a malware with the same hash value as a clean file.
What is a hash string?
Hashing is the process of transforming any given key or a string of characters into another value. This is usually represented by a shorter, fixed-length value or key that represents and makes it easier to find or employ the original string. The most popular use for hashing is the implementation of hash tables.
What is rolling hash function?
A rolling hash (also known as recursive hashing or rolling checksum) is a hash function where the input is hashed in a window that moves through the input.
How many characters are in SHA256 hash?
64 characters
It’s always 64 characters, which can be determined by running anything into one of the online SHA-256 calculators.
What is the output size in bytes of the MD5 hash function?
The hash size for the MD5 algorithm is 128 bits. The ComputeHash methods of the MD5 class return the hash as an array of 16 bytes. Note that some MD5 implementations produce a 32-character, hexadecimal-formatted hash.
How is hash calculated?
Hashing is simply passing some data through a formula that produces a result, called a hash. That hash is usually a string of characters and the hashes generated by a formula are always the same length, regardless of how much data you feed into it. For example, the MD5 formula always produces 32 character-long hashes.
How do you use Ssdeep?
ssDeep is useful when searching for similar files. For instance, two malware samples generated by the same builder which inserts configuration statically into a stub sample, may be easy to identify as having a high similarity. In the past, I have used ssDeep to preprocess a large number of samples.
What does Ssdeep score of 100 mean?
For instance, if a single byte of a file is modified, the ssDeep hashes of the original file and the modified file are considered highly similar. ssDeep scores range from zero (no similarity or negligible similarity) to 100 (very similar, if not an exact match).
What are the biggest issues with Ssdeep?
The largest issue with ssDeep as it stands is that it does not scale particularly well. In order to compare a fixed ssDeep hash against a set of other ssDeep hashes, the ssDeep compare function must be called for each hash being tested.
How do I uncompress a Ssdeep file in Linux?
This file should be named something like ssdeep-2.14.tar.gz. Uncompress the file with the following command: $ tar zxf ssdeep-2.14.tar.gz Change into the decompressed directory: $ cd ssdeep-2.14 and configure the program. $ ./configure
