All that whipping spreads out the sugar and traps tiny air bubbles inside the marshmallow giving it a sponge-like texture. It’s those tiny air bubbles that make the marshmallow less dense than the water and the marshmallow Peep floats! So how did we make the marshmallow more dense so it would sink?
What happens if you put a peep in soda?
White bubbles spread out all around the peep when pressure was applied. The peep that had been in soda was also very squishy. Its insides started to burst out as we pressed down gently on it, as if it was ready to disintegrate.
