What are early warning signs of MND?
Early symptoms can include:
- weakness in your ankle or leg – you might trip, or find it harder to climb stairs.
- slurred speech, which may develop into difficulty swallowing some foods.
- a weak grip – you might drop things, or find it hard to open jars or do up buttons.
- muscle cramps and twitches.
Can females get motor neurone disease?
The condition can affect adults of all ages, including teenagers, although this is extremely rare. It’s usually diagnosed in people over 40, but most people with the condition first develop symptoms in their 60s. It affects slightly more men than women.
Is Drooling a symptom of ALS?

- Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) It is very likely that the medical team will request this test for all patients being investigated for motor neurone disease.
- Magnetic Resonance Scanning (MRI)
- Lumbar Puncture.
Do MND symptoms come and go?
However, there is huge variation in how quickly it progresses, and it is different in each person who has it. Muscles weakened by ALS-MND do not recover. However, weeks or months may go by where the disease does not seem to progress. Eventually, severe disability develops.
Is MND more common in males or females?
MND is very rare under 40 and usually develops over the age of 50. The most common age of onset is around 75-79. It is more common in men than women. Research suggests the estimated lifetime risk of developing MND is approximately 1 in 350 for men and 1 in 500 for women.

Do people with ALS produce more saliva?
Excess saliva production (sialorrhea) is a very common problem in ALS patients. The disease does not cause the overproduction of saliva, like people often think, but instead weakens the throat muscles needed for regular swallowing.
Why is my mouth producing so much saliva suddenly?
Other conditions. Drooling is usually caused by excess saliva in the mouth. Medical conditions such as acid reflux and pregnancy can increase saliva production. Allergies, tumors, and above-the-neck infections such as strep throat, tonsil infection, and sinusitis can all impair swallowing.
Does MND affect bowels?
Bowel problems: are not usually caused directly by MND, but constipation may occur due to restricted mobility and/or changes to diet. Increasing fluid and fibre may help, or ask your doctor to prescribe a laxative. Diarrhoea can sometimes happen with a severely constipated bowel.
