Is Anomander Rake a God?
Throughout the whole of the Malazan series, Anomander Rake is refered to as an ascendant. But isn’t a God just an ascendant with worshipers? And the Onyx order Andii definitely seem to be worshiping Rake, in fact, he even has a Mortal Sword.
What happened to Anomander Rake?
Anomander Rake was killed during a duel with Traveller in Darujhistan. As Rake blocked Traveller’s sword, he let Dragnipur split his own skull. Once inside Dragnipur, he sacrificed himself to bring Mother Dark and the Gate of Darkness back to the Tiste Andii in Black Coral.
What is Dragnipur?
Dragnipur was the sword wielded by Anomander Rake. In its first appearance it was described as a two-handed sword with a silver dragonskull pommel and an archaic crosshilt. Baruk estimated that the wooden scabbard was a full six and a half feet long.

Now, Anomander Rake is clearly my favourite character in the Malazan universe (only other guy who comes close is Karsa Orlong). And I am certain that I am not the only one who feels this way. But I am asking myself: Why? What exactly makes Rake such an awesome character? Why do we love him?
