How many hours will a 4 stroke outboard motor last?
A typical two-stroke or four-stroke outboard engine should provide 1,500 hours of run time.
Do 2 stroke outboards have timing belts?
As you can see, a two-stroke engine does not utilise poppet valves like in a four-stroke. That means it doesn’t require a cam chain or belt, camshafts, buckets, shims, springs, etc. in addition to the valves.
How often do you change the timing belt on an outboard?
The normal timing belt replacement interval on a 4-stroke outboard is 1000 hours or five years, whichever comes first. But an engine might need a service-related procedure that requires timing belt removal before then.

Is it OK to idle a 4-stroke outboard?
Yes it is bad for them to idle all the time. The plugs load up with fuel as well as that fuel possibly washing out the cylinders. Outboard engines were made to run at their suggested WOT, this is why we prop our boats for just that.
How often should you service a 4-stroke outboard?
Most outboard, sterndrive and gasoline inboard engines require basic service every 100 hours or annually.
How often does a Yamaha 4 stroke timing belt change?
Re: Yamaha 4 stroke timing belt change? the maint schedule is 1000 hours OR 5 years whichever occures first. its just to cheap and easy to fix it BEFORE it breaks. however the F and T 40 motors are clearence engines. if the belt breaks the engine simply stops. Re: Yamaha 4 stroke timing belt change?
What happens when a timing belt breaks?
With an interference engine, in order for a valve to open the piston has to be on its way down, and that does happen when all the timing is linked in normally. But if a timing belt should break, then the Pistons will keep coming up and down but the valve to stop. So a valve that’s open will actually get hit by a piston and break it or bend it.
