MonoKote is commercially available lightweight plastic shrink wrap film available in various colors. It has a heat-activated adhesive on one side and is used to cover the surfaces of a model aircraft. The material is cut to size and applied to the airframe surfaces using a hobby iron and heat gun.
How to use MonoKote?
Covering Steps
- Sand the airframe to perfection.
- Clean the workbench and airplane parts with a vacuum.
- Seal the covering all the way around after trimming with the iron set at 225°.
- Use a heat gun to shrink the covering.
- Iron the covering to the wood with the iron set at 350° using an iron sock.
- Apply any graphics.
How do you clean MonoKote?
For best results, clean MonoKote-covered models with a covering cleaner/polish, or Detergent (dishwashing liquid, glass cleaner, etc.) can also be used. 3. Dents in MonoKote, as a result of any accident, can be removed simply by applying heat over the affected area.

Monokote over monokote sealed with trim solvent becomes one piece and works very well… HOWEVER…if your top colour is a darker color than your bottom colour it will shrink at a slower rate than the lighter colour so you have to be careful with a heat gun when shrinking the covering.

Yes, but if you’re not covering the entire surface (Like adding a stripe or shape) you’ll have to be very careful about melting the paint at the edges.
