Why do body shops use Bondo?
It’s standard for a body shop to use BONDO and provide a simple repair for minor cosmetic damage on any damaged vehicle area. Bondo is a compound mixed to fill dents and holes, then sanded down, and then the vehicle is repainted.
Can you apply Bondo over Bondo?

Should you primer before body filler?
For small repairs, you can bog directly over the bare metal. If the repair is larger, or you’re looking for a longer-lasting job, apply a base coat of epoxy primer before laying on the filler.
How long should Bondo set before sanding?
When used according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, Bondo takes 10 to 15 minutes to dry enough to form a sandable surface. After 45 minutes it’s cured enough to be painted.
Can I Bondo over rust?
However, Bondo shouldn’t be used on every kind of rust hole. Because it can’t support any weight or protect you in a crash, you should never attempt to use Bondo for rust holes in anything structural, such as frame rails or reinforced areas on unibody vehicles (i.e. most modern cars and crossovers).

Professional, high quality shops use body filler on custom cars and restorations continuously. Even as a DIY’er, using body filler on your every day vehicle or project car can be a fantastic option, so long as body filler is used correctly.
When should you not use Bondo?
Don’t use body filler on full gas tanks, or anywhere that gets hot. Bondo is resistant to fuel, but only after it is cured. If you are smoothing out a gas tank, that is great, it you are trying to fix a rusted out gas tank, this is not going to do a good job. Don’t confuse Bondo with JB Weld, the two are not the same.
Do you need to sand between layers of Bondo?
You don’t need to level it but you should scuff it with some 80/120 before applying the next coat.
Is it better to put bondo on bare metal or primer?
bondo goes over bare steel only. Never over any kind of paint, primer, etc.
