Why do ballet dancers put their hair in a bun?
A ballet bun is the traditional hairstyle worn by ballerinas. The main purposes being: to prevent hair from getting in the way of a ballerina, to provide a uniform (and elegant!) look for all of the ballerinas, and to maintain focus on the dancer (not the hair).
What is a ballerina bun called?
We call this a “Ballerina Bun” or a “Ballet Bun” at our house. I’ve also heard these buns called Dance Buns, Sock Buns, Donut Buns, Bun Molds, a Chignon, and Figure Skating Buns. I know some people make these with a rolled up sock (hence the name “sock bun”) or even with a large scrunchie as a foundation.
How do you wrap a ballet bun?

- Brush your hair.
- Pull your hair back into a ponytail and secure with an elastic.
- Twist the bun into a rope and wrap the rope in a circle around the elastic.
- Use hairpins to secure the bun to your head.
- Wrap the hair net around the bun and secure with more pins to secure all the loose hairs.
Where should a ballet bun be?
Placement of your ponytail determines placement of your bun. Ballet buns should be at the upper-middle of the head and follow the line of the cheek-bone. Secure ponytail tightly with hair elastic. Use hair spray to eliminate any “whisps” around the head, smoothing any remaining bumps of hair on the head.
Can ballerinas have bangs?
Female students’ hair must be worn in a traditional ballet bun at the crown of the head. No bangs allowed. If a female student has short hair all hair including bangs must be clipped back and gelled away from the face.
Can ballerinas wear their hair down?
You cannot turn without spotting your head, and you definitely can’t turn with your eyes closed. At this point it is actually a safety hazard having your hair down! The only one left to mention now is, Tradition! Tradition is important, but it’s not the reason we have to have a ballet bun.

However, in Europe some companies require females to be no taller than the traditional 165cm, while others have a minimum height of 173cm.
