Is the Saco River safe to swim in?
Saco River, Weston’s Beach, River Street, Fryeburg: A large beach is open to the public here with ample parking. It’s a popular swimming spot for fans of the Saco, as well as for those launching canoes and kayaks. Clear, safe water runs in this section of the river.

During the summer season, the Saco River averages 3 feet deep (some short sections are deeper) with some small rapids, lots of sandy beaches and some rope swings for the more adventurous.

The majority of the river’s 1,600 square mile watershed remains undeveloped or underdeveloped, and the Saco River is widely recognized as one of the cleanest major rivers in New England.
What lives in the Saco River?
SRWC admits most native mammal species including raccoons, squirrels, porcupines, opossums, skunks, weasels, and foxes.
Can you tube the Saco River on your own?
$20/person for Shuttle+tube rental or $10/person if you bring your own (reasonably sized) tubes. Canoes will NOT fit in our trailers. $5 Cooler float rentals available at check-in and subject to availability. Kids are welcome if over the age of 5 and accompanied by a responsible legal guardian.

Are there fish in the Saco River?
The Saco River is stocked from its headwaters at Saco Lake all the way down Conway. To put things into perspective, per New Hampshire Fish and Game, the Saco River received 15,184 stocked trout in 2018 alone. This included 8,483 brook trout as well as 5,128 nonnative brown trout and 1,573 nonnative rainbow trout.
Can you boat on the Saco River?
Any boat, including a canoe, that has a motor of any type is required to have a valid registration. Owners of non-Maine registered watercraft are required to purchase and display a nonresident sticker. Click here to obtain your sticker online.
Are there snakes in the Saco River?
Snakes, turtles, salamanders, and frogs- Maine may not have the variety you see in tropical regions, but we still have them! Our state is home to nine different species of snake, eight species of turtle, and a myriad of amphibians.
Do you have to pay to float the Saco River?
There are plenty of sandy beaches along your journey and even rope swings for the more adventurous! All rates include a life jacket. Please note that there are no life guards along the Saco River….A relaxing 1-mile float with sandy beaches and rope swings along the way.

Do you need water shoes for Saco River?
A: Yes, shoes are mandatory. Shoes that are most acceptable are any water shoe with a heel strap, Croc-style shoes or old sneakers. If you don’t have proper water shoes, we sell proper river footwear at on on-site River Store. The river bed is sandy rocky bottom that can be sharp or jagged.
