What is ICOM D-STAR?
The D-STAR stands for Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio. It is an open standard digital communication protocol established by JARL*.
Are D-STAR and DMR compatible?
D-Star does not support mixed mode at all. It is digital all the time. DMR and System Fusion both do but not equally. DMR can run in mixed mode but when you setup to support both analog and digital you lose the networking ability that makes these digital modes so compelling.
How many D-STAR users are there?
Like most things that were “new” in ham radio (such as SSB, FM and packet), D-STAR grew slowly at first, but began taking off during the end of the last decade and now has approximately 11,000 users today. Most of those users are on the air using D-STAR repeaters, which number more than 500 worldwide.
What is D-STAR enabled?
D-STAR Gateways enable users to connect from a local D-STAR repeater, equipped with a D-STAR Gateway, to any other Gateway equipped D-STAR repeater. Once an Amateur is registered with a repeater gateway, it can connect to D-STAR users beyond the local repeaters.
How does DMR radio work?
DMR is a TDMA mode (Time Division Multiple Access) which means that it allows several users to share the same frequency channel by dividing that signal into different time slots. Each frequency has a slot 1 or slot 2 and each slot can be used by different users.
