The Historian is the 2005 debut novel of American author Elizabeth Kostova. The plot blends the history and folklore of Vlad Țepeș and his fictional equivalent Count Dracula. Is The Historian a good book?
Good premise, but difficult to really get into. While I enjoy historical fiction as much or more than most, this story just seems to drag when it should be captivating. The plot lines are good, just seems to get lost in details, long descriptions, and random digression occasionally.

Compared with the many vampire novels out there, The Historian is definitely a cut above average, and far removed from the dark fantasy romance genre (I have little luck finding books I enjoy in this genre).

What do you think about the historian?
The Historian turns out not to be any of the people pursuing Dracula, but Dracula himself. He’s predictably vain and meta, but he’s SO BORING. The ending was a bit anticlimactic, and I feel like the explanation of HOW he became undead was completely missing.
Is “the historian” the Best Book of 2005?
The Historian was the “it” book of 2005. It came with a huge advance and big expectations and a national promotional tour. From the start it was a bestseller, capitalizing on the success of The Da Vinci Code, with which is shares more than a few similarities. I purchased The Historian back in 2005, and it has sat on my bookshelf ever since.
